Greek Police Apprehend 18 Foreigners After Refugee Center Fire

Greek police detained 18 foreigners today following a fire at the Moria refugee camp on Monday on the east Aegean Sea island of Lesvos.

Of those detained, nine were arrested and are being brought before prosecutors, Greek police said in a text message.

The number of refugees hosted in Greece’s facilities as of 8 a.m. Tuesday stands at 60,395, according to an e-mailed statement from the Greek government. The number on Lesvos is 5,708 compared with a refugee housing capacity on the island for 3,500 people.

Between Sept. 5 and Sept. 11, 879 refugees and migrants crossed the sea from Turkey to Greek islands with most people arriving in September on the islands of Chios, Lesvos and Samos, according to the latest data from the United Nations Refugee Agency
