Australian Lawmaker Threatens to Quit Over Tax: Courier-Mail

Federal lawmaker George Christensen has threatened to quit the Liberal-National Party if a proposed tax on foreign workers remains in place, the Courier-Mail reported on its website.

He told told locals in his Queensland state electorate before national elections in July that he would quit the governing party if the so-called backpacker tax remained, the Courier-Mail said.

“I believe the Government is going to axe the backpacker tax and put in place arrangements that farmers can accept,’’ Christensen said, according to the newspaper. “I’m not trying to destabilize, but I was that confident such a change will occur that I gave that commitment to locals.”

The proposed increased tax for those on working holiday visas is already scaring off travelers who normally help with seasonal fruit picking, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported this month.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
