Zimbabwe High Court Overturns Government Ban on Demonstrations

Zimbabwe’s High Court ruled that a government decree banning demonstrations was unconstitutional after a coalition of opposition parties challenged the ban issued Sept. 2.

Judge Priscilla Chigumba said in a ruling in Harare, the capital, that the police have seven days to respond. The ban on protests was made “without following the law or the constitution of the country” which grants people the right to demonstrate, she said.

Police banned demonstrations after a protest march turned violent in the capital on Aug. 26, leading to about 50 people being injured and almost 70 arrests when police used tear gas and water cannons to subdue angry protesters demanding electoral reforms.
