Czechs Detain Man for Attempted Breach of Merkel’s Motorcade

Czech police detained an unidentified local man who attempted to breach the motorcade of German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier Thursday, a police spokesman said.

Neither Merkel, nor anyone else was affected by the attempt, police spokesman Josef Bocan said by phone. The man was still being questioned by police, he added.

The attempt took place before 2 p.m. on Thursday as her motorcade headed from Prague’s international airport to the city center, Bocan said. Police found no weapons in the car but there were some items, including cobblestones, in the vehicle, he said.

Merkel’s chief spokesman, Steffen Seibert, didn’t respond to phone calls or a text message inquiring about the incident.
