S. African Opposition EFF to Vote for DA in Gauteng Councils

South Africa’s leftwing opposition Economic Freedom Fighters party said it will vote for its rival, the Democratic Alliance, in municipalities in the industrial and political hubs of Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Even so it won’t form a formal coalition with the DA, a centrist party that the EFF leader Julius Malema said on Wednesday was “the party of white racists.”

Malema said at a press conference in Johannesburg that the decision is because the the DA is a “better devil” than the ruling African National Congress.

The ANC posted its worst ever election result in a municipal vote held on Aug. 3, losing its absolute majority in four of the country’s eight major metropolitan areas.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
