Support for Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union-led bloc has been eroding since last year’s influx of refugees and is now at the level when she first became chancellor in 2005, according to FG Wahlen polling data. Many deserting the party have fled to the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany founded just before the last federal election. After three attacks in the country in July involving asylum seekers, Merkel’s personal approval rating has dropped to the lowest since April.
