Sport utility vehicles may have surpassed 40 percent of newly registered passenger cars in China last month, double the proportion barely two years earlier, with figures due Friday. The SUV segment’s share of vehicles registered in July likely jumped from the record 36 percent level reached in June, based on an industry association sales report that said demand rose at rate more than double the pace of the overall passenger-vehicle market. Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd., Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., SAIC Motor Corp. and General Motors Co. are challenging segment leader Great Wall Motor Co. by offering more compact and mid-size SUVs.
