Zambia Names New Director of Public Prosecution Ahead of Vote

Zambian President Edgar Lungu named Lilian Suyuni as Director of Public Prosecution to replace Mutembo Nchito, who has been removed from office after the recommendation of a tribunal.

Suyuni’s appointment is subject to approval by lawmakers, the nation’s presidency said in an e-mailed statement late Tuesday.

Lungu is one of nine candidates vying for the presidency of Africa’s second-biggest copper producer in Thursday’s vote. Violence and intimidation are threatening the credibility of Zambia’s presidential elections and the nation’s reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies.
