Pound Plunges as Britain Votes to Leave European Union

The British pound gyrated in a range of more than 15 U.S. cents on Friday. While early poll results from the U.K. referendum on European Union membership prompted traders to drive up the currency by as much as 1 percent, it subsequently plummeted by as much as 9.5 percent as results pointed to an increasing likelihood that the “Leave” campaign would prevail.
