Coal-fired generation accounts for more than 70 percent of China’s power needs and the fossil fuel is likely to keep factories running and lights on for some time yet. While pollution problems prompt policymakers to increase cleaner options from solar to nuclear, coal will remain the dominant source of electricity until at least 2040, according to data from the International Energy Agency.
