U.S. May Retail Sales Surprise With 0.5% Gain

As Janet Yellen and her Federal Reserve colleagues meet for another policy meeting starting Tuesday, the economy just got a little boost. Retail sales rose more than forecast in May, showing U.S. consumer spending will help lift economic growth in the second quarter. The 0.5 percent increase in purchases followed a 1.3 percent jump the previous month that was the biggest gain in a year, Commerce Department figures showed Tuesday in Washington.
