South African Court Rules Aug. 3 Local Election Can Proceed

South Africa’s Constitutional Court ruled that the Aug. 3 local government election can go ahead even though the Independent Electoral Commission hasn’t complied with the law to have addresses for all voters.

The IEC has 18 months to update the voters roll, Mogoeng Mogoeng, the chief justice, said in a judgment of the nation’s highest court.

The IEC petitioned the court in April to provide clarity on the electoral rules, after the Electoral Court halted several municipal by-elections because there were no addresses for thousands of people on the voters’ roll.
