Abraaj Keeps Sights on Emerging Markets, Clear of Big Firms

  • Won’t expand westward because of larger players, Naqvi says
  • Sees deal opportunities in Peru, Indonesia; cautious on Brazil

Abraaj Group, one of the largest private equity investors in developing markets such as the Middle East and Latin America, has no plans to expand into North America and Europe even as firms on those continents increasingly move into emerging markets, Chief Executive Officer Arif Naqvi said.

“I’m a big believer that if you’re not No. 1, 2 or 3 in a particular marketplace then you shouldn’t be there,” Naqvi said Tuesday in an interview at Bloomberg LP’s headquarters in New York. “More and more firms are looking at our markets. We welcome that, and we show the way.”
