‘Big Four’ Stay Away as Asian Low-Fare Airlines Gang Up: Chart

Eight low-cost carriers including Singapore Airlines Ltd.’s Scoot and Tiger Airways have joined forces to access more customers by forming the first Asia-Pacific budget airline alliance. While members of Value Alliance stretch from Japan to Southeast Asia to Australia, their combined fleet size of 176 aircraft compares with 170 at AirAsia Bhd., 123 at Jetstar Group, and 108 each at Lion Air and Interglobe Aviation Ltd.’s IndiGo -- the region’s biggest budget airlines which are absent from the partnership. Richard Laig, a partner for the Asia Pacific region at consultancy Mango Aviation, says he’s “skeptical” as to what alliance members can offer to generate additional revenue.
