Dark Times for Coal as Use in U.K. Power Output Vanishes: Chart

Power generation from coal dropped to zero overnight on May 10 for the first time since at least 2009. It peaked at 25.3 gigawatts in December 2011, when it accounted for almost 50 percent of total generation. Profitability of coal stations is near the lowest since Bloomberg began tracking the data seven years ago, while emissions rules have hastened the closing of facilities and the U.K. month-ahead power price is at the lowest for the time of year since at least 2007.
