In LaLiga Deal, Genius Sports and SIS See Profit in Gambling

  • Live sports data meets a growing demand for in-game betting
  • LaLiga includes Ronaldo's Real Madrid and Messi's Barcelona

More than $1 trillion is bet on sports each year. About 70 percent of that is wagered on soccer, according to some estimates.

To meet that demand -- much of it coming from Asia -- Satellite Information Services Ltd. signed an exclusive partnership for Genius Sports to distribute official data of Spanish soccer to betting houses around the world.

The deal includes LaLiga, the top division of soccer in Spain whose teams include Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid and Lionel Messi’s Barcelona. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

London-based SIS has been LaLiga’s exclusive partner for live betting data since 2014. The partnership with Genius, also based in London, will enable wider distribution of data for more than 2,500 matches in three leagues and two cup competitions each season, said Paul Baker, strategic development director for SIS. The deal includes pre-match, in-game and post-match data.

Genius also distributes data for FIBA, the governing body for international basketball, and serves as the integrity monitor for Major League Baseball.
