Ex-Rwandan Diplomat Accused of Spying Dies in Burundian Prison

A former Rwandan diplomat imprisoned in Burundi on allegations of being a spy has died, the Rwandan ambassador to the East African country said.

Jacques Bihozagara died on Tuesday at Mpimba prison in the capital, Bujumbura, Ambassador Amandin Rugira said in a statement on his Twitter account. The cause of death isn’t known, he said.

Burundi has accused neighboring Rwanda of backing rebels seeking to oust President Pierre Nkurunziza, whose decision in April to stand for a disputed third term triggered violence that has killed at least 479 people. Landlocked Burundi and Rwanda are members of the East African Community, a six-nation bloc with a combined gross domestic product of $147.5 billion.
