Burundi Major Shot Dead in Second Killing Targeting Army in Dayby
A Burundian major was shot dead in the capital, a witness and local media said, less than 12 hours after another senior military figure was assassinated at army headquarters.
Major Didier Muhimpundu was killed by unidentified gunmen outside a bar in Bujumbura late Tuesday, his friend Mukurendanga Roland said in an interview. SOS Medias Burundi, a local journalists’ group, also reported his death on its Facebook page, citing family members.
The killing came the same day Lieutenant Colonel Darius Ikurakure, who was in charge of operations in restive parts of the East African capital, was shot dead in the city. Burundi’s army said late Tuesday that investigations have begun into the killing, in a statement read on national television. Local newspaper Iwacu had reported Ikurakure was killed that afternoon by a man in army uniform who fled the scene.
Burundi has been rocked by unrest that’s killed more than 440 people since President Pierre Nkurunziza decided in April to stand for a third term in the face of popular opposition. The United Nations has warned the country risks sliding back into a civil conflict that could spill over into a region that includes the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa’s biggest copper producer.
