Sweden's Refugee Costs Will Top Defense Spending in 2016: Chart

Sweden welcomed the highest number of refugees per capita in Europe in 2015, a total of 163,000 -- or 1.6 percent of the population. With spending on integration set to outpace defense spending for the first time this year, the country’s cherished welfare state is under pressure. While Prime Minister Stefan Loefven says the arrival of so many young males will revitalize an aging workforce, past experience suggests only one in four refugees finds a full-time job in the first eight years.
