ESPN, Verizon Make Progress in Talks to Settle Custom TV Suit

ESPN, a unit of Walt Disney Co., and Verizon Communications Inc. in a court filing dated Tuesday say they’ve made progress in settlement negotiations and that a hold they agreed to put on proceedings would help talks. *ESPN sued Verizon in New York state court in April, escalating a battle over how much freedom the phone company has to repackage pay-television networks for its FiOS customers *ESPN accused Verizon of wrongly using programming in new service called Custom TV *Suit illustrates growing dispute between Verizon and sports networks over television packages that give customers a choice of channels *Verizon said earlier this month it will offer customers two low-cost bundles, one including sports channels and one without them *News of the progress was reported earlier in the Hollywood Reporter *The case is ESPN Inc. v.
