Swatch Short Interest Near Record on Smartwatch Threat: Chart

The short interest in Swatch Group AG’s bearer shares -- those which can be traded by physically transferring the certificates -- is about 30 percent, near a record level. Short sellers are betting that smartwatches are taking market share away from the Swiss watchmaker’s lower-priced brands, according to Simon Colvin, an analyst at Markit Ltd. in London. “Shorting always means speculation and manipulation,” Swatch Chief Executive Officer Nick Hayek said by phone.
