Tanzanian Opposition Party Urges Boycott of Zanzibar Vote Rerun

A Tanzanian opposition party urged people on the semi-autonomous archipelago of Zanzibar to boycott a rerun of presidential elections scheduled for March 20.

Election authorities invalidated the results of the Oct. 25 vote in Zanzibar, which is in a union government with mainland Tanzania, citing violations in the electoral laws, after the opposition Civic United Front declared its candidate the winner even before the official results were confirmed.

The rerun would be “illegal,” Twaha Taslima, acting national chairman of the CUF, told reporters Thursday in Tanzania’s commerical capital, Dar es Salaam. He said the legitimate election was last year and it “should be reinstated and the results released.”

Zanzibar has its own parliament and leader, separate from Tanzania.
