South African Cash, Bonds Beating 2015's Top Performer: ChartBy
After outperforming all South African asset classes last year with an 8 percent return, real estate investment trusts are this year’s biggest losers, falling behind equities, debt and cash. Bonds, which lost 3.9 percent in 2015, are leading gains, climbing 1.8 percent, while cash as measured by the South African Short Term Fixed Interest Index is up 0.5 percent, adding to its 6.5 percent advance in 2015. REITs, along with most domestic stocks and bonds, plunged in December when President Jacob Zuma fired two finance ministers in a week, exacerbating damage from the commodity-price rout.
