Since Betfair Plc and Paddy Power Plc announced plans to merge, shares of the betting companies have blazed a trail.

The transaction will create the world’s biggest publicly-listed online gaming company, giving investors a way into the industry’s fastest-growing area at a time when traditional bookmakers are hamstrung by increased regulation and taxation. With a market value approaching 8 billion pounds ($11.4 billion), the enlarged company will be a sure bet for inclusion in the U.K. FTSE 100 Index after the deal is completed next week.
