Adult Coloring Books Help WH Smith Halt Years of Decline: Chart

Same-store sales at WH Smith Plc’s U.K. high-street outlets -- those on a shopping street, rather than in a travel location -- rose for the first time in years at Christmas.

The growth was the first “in analytical living memory,” benefiting from a craze for adult coloring books and promotions on items such as Sharpie pens, Jonathan Pritchard, an analyst at Peel Hunt, said in a note. The retailer said it expects profit growth for the year to be “slightly ahead of plan,” sending the shares up as much as 8.9 percent in London, the most since October 2013.
