EU Backs Merkel's Actions in Response to Cologne Violence

Germany is “fully justified” in asserting that asylum-seekers who break laws will lose their international protections, European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans said.

“I fully understand what the federal government is doing,” Timmermans told reporters in Brussels, when asked about German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s response to the violence against women at public New Year’s Eve celebrations in Cologne. “Our refugee policy is only feasible if people act in accordance with the law within the EU. Everyone in the EU has to understand how we want women treated, we’re not going to return to the middle ages.”

Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker is slated to meet with Merkel in Berlin on Thursday.
