More French Women Are Joining Islamic State, France Inter Says

  • Over 200 French females are among Islamic State Ranks
  • Women work as Sharia police or have babies for IS, report says

About 220 women with the French citizenship have joined the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, France Inter radio says, citing an report by the intelligence services.

The number of French women joining the Islamic State is expanding and they represent about one-third of all French nationals who went to the region to join the terrorist group, according to the report. The number of women who left for Syria and Iraq rose threefold over the past two years, the report says.

Women are not fighting as IS soldiers. Instead they are marrying and “having babies.” Some women are working in the organization’s administration and others are part of the Islamic police in charge on putting into force the Sharia law, France Inter said citing the report.
