Djibouti Cuts Diplomatic Ties With Iran in Solidarity With SaudiPaul Richardson
Djibouti cut diplomatic ties with Iran, joining several Arab nations that have taken the step after protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran on Sunday.
“Djibouti cut its diplomatic ties with Iran out of solidarity with Saudi Arabia,” Djiboutian Foreign Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf said in a mobile-phone text message Wednesday.
The attack on the embassy followed Saudi Arabia’s execution of Nimr al-Nimr, an outspoken critic of the Sunni Muslim-dominated state’s treatment of its Shiite minority, who look to Iran for spiritual leadership. The cleric was among 47 men put to death Saturday after terrorism-related convictions.
