Shanghai Boosts Police on New Year’s After Stampede A Year Ago

Shanghai ordered its entire police force on duty and took other safety measures along the riverside Bund area to avoid the crowd buildup that led to a deadly stampede last New Year’s Eve.

The police issued a “level-one” call, putting the entire force on duty from today, the municipal government said on its microblog. Police patrols were added for neighborhoods where crowds were expected to gather, including the Bund and the Xintiandi outdoor restaurant and bar area. Under a new crowd-control system, LED screens and directional signs have also been erected.
