Puerto Rico Governor Says He’s Open to Federal Control Board

Puerto Rico Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla said he would be open to putting the island under a federal control board as long as it respects the government’s political autonomy.

Some U.S. lawmakers have proposed the idea as a condition of assisting Puerto Rico with the fiscal crisis brought on by its $70 billion of debt.

“If it respects Puerto Rico’s self government, we will be able to consider it,” Garcia Padilla told reporters during a press conference in Washington.
