Nigeria’s Northern City of Kano Hit by Twin Blasts, Many Dead

Northern Nigeria’s biggest city of Kano was hit by twin explosions which left many people dead at its phone market, Saminu Umar, a phone seller who witnessed the blasts, said.

Sani Usman, a military spokesman in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, confirmed the blasts without giving details. “I can’t tell the casualty figures until I confirm from officers on the ground,” he said by phone.

Boko Haram Islamist militants have stepped up gun and bomb attacks in the country’s mainly Muslim north as troops intensify their offensive to meet President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to end the insurgency by the end of this year.
