Sony Leads U.S. Box Office With Jack Black ‘Goosebumps’ Revival

“Goosebumps,” a horror-movie revival of the beloved children’s books, led the box office in its debut two weekends before Halloween.

The Sony Corp. feature starring Jack Black posted weekend ticket sales of $23.5 million in the U.S. and Canada, researcher Rentrak Corp. said Sunday in an e-mailed statement. It beat new releases including “Bridge of Spies,” Steven Spielberg’s first film in three years. Netflix Inc.’s first theatrical feature, “Beasts of No Nation,” opened on a handful of screens.

“Goosebumps” books, penned by R.L Stine, have sold 400 million copies worldwide in 32 languages, giving Sony a built-in audience for the family film. The PG-rated movie also capitalized on the buildup ahead of Halloween later this month.
