Congo Sets Up Office for Grand Hydropower Project in Presidency

Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila established the Office for the Development and Promotion of the Grand Inga Project and appointed former minister Bruno Kapandji as its head.

The office will report directly to Kabila and Kapandji will have ministerial status, according to an Oct. 13 presidential decree e-mailed Friday from the capital, Kinshasa. Kapandji was previously the minister of hydropower resources and electricity.

Congo is trying to develop the Inga hydropower complex on the Congo River. It would include Inga 3 and Grand Inga, which would span the entire river. The complex could eventually produce 50,000 megawatts, according to the World Bank.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
