Common European Asylum Only Solution on Migrants, Renzi Says

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said a common European asylum system was “the only solution possible” to Europe’s worst refugee crisis since World War II.

Speaking at the United Nations in New York on sustainable development goals, Renzi said Italy -- which along with Greece has born the brunt of the refugee influx from across the Mediterranean -- was aware of its “moral responsibility.”

Referring to “unbelievable sufferings and unacceptable loss of life,” Renzi said the migrants “need a very clear answer today.”

He said he hoped the European Union would agree on a “common European asylum system because this is the only solution possible.”
