U.A.E. Forces Free British Hostage Held by al-Qaeda in Yemen

United Arab Emirates forces freed a British petroleum engineer held in southern Yemen by al-Qaeda since February 2014, the official Wam news agency said.

It gave his name variously as Robert Douglas Stewart Semple and Douglas Robert Semple, citing his age as 64. He was flown from the southern port city of Aden to the Emirati capital of Abu Dhabi on a U.A.E. military aircraft and will travel to the U.K. following health checks, Wam said.

The U.A.E. is part of a Saudi Arabia-led military coalition carrying out airstrikes against Yemeni Houthi rebels.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan called British Prime Minister David Cameron late Saturday to alert him to the mission, Wam said.
