Taiwan’s Lee Backs Bigger Japan Defense Role Amid U.S. Decline

Japan needs to take a greater security role in Asia to offset a decline in U.S. power, former Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui said.

Lee, who was visiting Tokyo on Thursday, was speaking in support of security legislation sought by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that would allow the nation to come to the military aid of an ally under attack. He said the measures, which Abe pushed through the lower house of parliament last week, were required because of the changing balance of power in the world.
