Johannesburg’s Uber Drivers Ordered to Apply for Taxi Licenses

Uber Technologies Inc. drivers in Johannesburg should apply for the same licenses as metered taxis to be able to operate in South Africa’s most populous city as part of an agreement brokered by the provincial government.

“Uber partner-drivers should apply for metered taxi licenses and they should do so as soon as possible,” Ismail Vadi, transport minister in Gauteng province, said in a statement on Thursday.

Uber drivers in Johannesburg faced harassment earlier this month following a protest by taxi operators who compete with the personal transportation service, which operates via a smartphone application. The company has faced opposition from taxi companies globally since its founding in 2009 as a potentially cheaper and faster alternative.
