Updated on

Riot police used water cannons in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, to disperse thousands of protesters angry at a planned 16 percent increase in electricity prices.

More than 200 protesters and journalists were detained as police, including some in plain clothes, forcefully broke up the demonstration early on Tuesday by some 5,000 people who had been sitting in the road near the presidential compound on central Baghramyan Avenue for more than nine hours.
