Somalia Army Says It Foiled Al-Shabaab Attack on Central Town

Somalia’s army said it foiled an attempted attack on a regional government meeting claimed by Islamist militants al-Shabaab, killing all four assailants.

Somali forces were aware of a planned raid on the gathering of local leaders in the central town of Adado and managed to block it, Mohamed Yusuf, spokesman for the country’s internal security agency, said by phone Thursday.

Al-Shabaab said it used an explosives-laden vehicle to target “so-called peacekeepers” and “Somali apostates,” according to a statement read on Radio Andalus, a Somali broadcaster that backs the al-Qaeda-linked group. Islamist fighters inflicted “heavy casualties,” al-Shabaab said, without giving any details on its own losses.
