South Africa Says 2014 Wheat Crop Shrinks 6.4% to Four-Year Low

Wheat output in South Africa, the continent’s biggest grower of the cereal after Ethiopia, fell 6.4 percent in 2014, making it the smallest harvest in four years, the Crop Estimates Committee said.

The crop was 1.75 million metric tons, the smallest since 2010, Marda Scheepers, a spokeswoman for the Pretoria-based Crop Estimates Committee, said by phone Thursday. That’s 1.4 percent less than the 1.78 million-ton estimate by the organization on Feb. 26.
