Southern Developing 53 Megawatts of Solar Power in MississippiJustin Doom
Southern Co., owner of Georgia’s largest utility, is developing 53 megawatts of solar capacity in Mississippi.
Southern’s Mississippi unit will receive the power and renewable-energy credits from the solar farms, Atlanta-based Southern said in a statement Thursday. Terms weren’t disclosed.
Mississippi Power is building a 50-megawatt power plant with Strata Solar LLC near Hattiesburg. It’s also planning a project with Hannah Solar and the U.S. Navy at the Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport that will have about 3 megawatts of capacity.
The solar farms need approval from state regulators. They’re expected to go into operation by the end of next year and will generate enough electricity for about 7,800 homes.
