‘Insurgent’ Tops Box Office in Latest Lions Gate Teen Drama

“The Divergent Series: Insurgent,” the second film in Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.’s latest young-adult franchise, topped the box office in its opening weekend on the strength of female moviegoers.

The sequel, featuring Shailene Woodley as a renegade on the run in a futuristic Chicago, collected $52.3 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales, according to an e-mailed statement Monday from Rentrak Corp. Walt Disney Co.’s returning “Cinderella” placed second with $35 million.
