Hampton Tops Manhattan in NCAA Opener to Face KentuckyRob Gloster
Hampton University beat Manhattan College 74-64 in the first game of the men’s NCAA basketball tournament, advancing to face undefeated Kentucky.
Also Tuesday night, Mississippi overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to defeat Brigham Young University 94-90 and move on to play Xavier.
The Hampton Pirates, who entered the game as the only team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament with a losing record, improved to 17-17 with the win at Dayton, Ohio.
Quinton Chievous and Reginald Johnson each scored 15 points for the Pirates in the first of four games used to pick the final schools for the 64-team field.
The Pirates, of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, led 38-31 at halftime and never trailed in the second half.
Shane Richards had 17 points for the Manhattan Jaspers (19-14), who are coached by Steve Masiello -- a member of Kentucky’s 1997-98 championship team.
Hampton will face Kentucky (34-0), the tournament’s overall No. 1 seed, on Thursday in Louisville, about 80 miles west of the Wildcats’ campus in Lexington.
