English Premier League’s Sunderland Fires Head Coach Gus Poyet

Sunderland fired head coach Guy Poyet with the Premier League soccer team one spot above the relegation zone of England’s top division.

Poyet, 47, took over in October 2013 and saved the team from being demoted to the second-tier Championship. The former Tottenham and Chelsea player also took Sunderland to the League Cup final. He joined after four seasons at Brighton & Hove Albion.

“Sadly, we have not made the progress that any of us had hoped for this season and we find ourselves battling, once again, at the wrong end of the table,” Sunderland Chairman Ellis Short said. “We have therefore made the difficult decision that a change is needed.”

Sunderland is in 17th place, one point ahead of Burnley, after losing 4-0 to Aston Villa Saturday. The bottom three teams of the 20-club league are demoted every season.
