S. Africans Fighting Boko Haram Are Mercenaries, Military Says

South Africans fighting against the Islamist militant group Boko Haram in Nigeria are mercenaries and may face prosecution for violating the nation’s laws, a South African Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said.

“We don’t have deployment in Nigeria,” Joy Peter said by phone Thursday from the capital, Pretoria. Any South Africans involved in the conflict in Nigeria “are not under our authority as the South African National Defence Force. We refer to them as mercenaries. The National Prosecuting Authority and the police would have to investigate them.”
