Child Dies, 30 Missing as Ferry Sinks on Bangladesh River

One child is dead and about 30 people are missing after a ferry capsized on the Padma River northwest of the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka.

The child, one of some 30 who swam to shore when the boat flipped over after it was struck by a cargo trawler, died later in the hospital, Rashida Ferdous, deputy commissioner of the district of Manikganj, said by phone from the accident site.

Rescue efforts and a search for the missing are under way by the Fire Service and Civil Defence authorities, Ferdous said. She could not confirm a Xinhua News report that the ferry carried about 200 passengers.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
