Nigerian troops fought back Boko Haram militants who tried to take control of the city of Gombe in the northeast, the region hardest hit by the Islamist insurgency.
The Gombe state capital and surrounding areas were placed under a 24-hour curfew, limiting movement apart from essential services until further notice, according to a statement from Abubakar Sule Bage, secretary to the region’s government. Insurgents also attacked the communities of Hina, Dadin Kowa and Zambuk on the outskirts of Gombe, residents said on Saturday.
