Star Wars Bounty Hunter Boba Fett Delivers $27,000 at Auction—Plus Nine Other Toys
In an ongoing Star Wars battle over good and evil in Thornaby, in the U.K.'s Northern England, the dark side won on Wednesday—all 3 ¾ inches of him.
Figurine Boba Fett, Darth Vader's hired bounty hunter in The Empire Strikes Back, fetched £18,000 ($27,221) at Wednesday's Vectis Auction, the world’s largest toy auction house. A rare gem from the collection of Craig Stevens, former U.K. Star Wars Fan Club chairman, Boba was expected to draw attention. Stevens's decision to sell toys via Vectis sparked a veritable estimate frenzy in British headlines and, as the gavel dropped, the final price for Boba indeed broke records for sales of the cult character. This was just one of 70 figurines in Stevens's personal collection up for auction. In about three hours, they brought him approximately $63,209, according to the auction house. (The force is clearly with him.)
"It’s definitely the largest value sold for one private owner for Star Wars carded figures," says Louise Harker, communications representative for Vectis. Bidding took place via a live on-line auction. Think of it as a civilized Comic-Con for the wealthy.
In its entirety, Vectis's "TV & Film Related" 477-lot auction amassed £77,855 for the sellers.
For most collectors, today’s selloff was a routine affair. For Stevens, who has been collecting toys since he was seven years old, it was a milestone. "It will be terribly heart-wrenching to see my items sold," Stevens told the U.K.’s Mirror before the sale.
Something tells us he may now be singing a happier tune.
