Second-seeded Maria Sharapova defeated seventh-seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in straight sets today and advanced to an all-Russian semifinal at the Australian Open.

Sharapova won 6-3, 6-2 and moved on to face compatriot Ekaterina Makarova, who upset third-seeded Simona Halep earlier today in the season’s first Grand Slam tennis tournament.

Makarova, the 10th seed from Russia, defeated the Romanian 6-4, 6-0 in 69 minutes.

The other two quarterfinals, to be played tomorrow, include three Americans, with No. 1 Serena Williams facing No. 11 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia and No. 18 Venus Williams, 34, playing 19-year-old Madison Keys, the only unseeded women’s player left in the tournament.

It is the first time since the 2004 U.S. Open that three American women have reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament.

There are two men’s quarterfinals today, with No. 3 Rafael Nadal of Spain playing No. 7 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic and sixth-seeded Briton Andy Murray playing Australian Nick Kyrgios.
