Venezuela Protests Fizzle as Opposition Cuts Caracas Rally Short

A weekend rally by opposition leaders in Venezuela fizzled after groups of protesters scuffled with police and former presidential candidate Henrique Capriles canceled a planned speech in Caracas.

Several thousand opposition supporters marched across eastern Caracas on Jan. 24 waving Venezuelan flags and banging pots and pans in protest against President Nicolas Maduro’s government and a chronic shortage of consumer staples. The rally, about a year after a wave of violent street protests against Maduro claimed more than 40 lives, abruptly ended when student organizers urged people to go home quickly and safely.
